The Mystery Man Of Sandy Cove
In 1863 a man was discovered on the beach at Sandy Cove. Both of his legs had been professionally amputated above the knees, were bandaged and only partially healed.
Beside him was a jug of water and a tin of biscuits. A ship had been spotted offshore the previous day so it was assumed he had been brought ashore after dark.
Only the word 'Jerome' could be determined from the man's moaning and muttering and it was presumed that was his name.
For the next 49 years Jerome' never broke his silence, fuelling all sorts of speculation as to his origins and creating his label, "Mystery Man of Sandy Cove."
He lived out his silent life with several local families, supported in part by a $2 weekly supplement from the provincial government.
Such was the continuing interest in this mystery man that a large stone marker with the name Jerome was recently erected over his grave in Meteghan Cemetery.
