Description From Owner:
  • This is said to be a Mi'kmaw word meaning ‘an angle of land formed between a river and a lake,' not ‘a money-laundering centre.'
  • Another Mi'kmaw word, Wosobachuk means 'placid water.' John Cameron was the first settler here, around 1807.

  • Neil MacNeil

  • "Great Cursers And Prayers"

Neil MacNeil, who settled here in 1818, wrote a personal memoir of life at the time when most settlers spoke Gaelic.

"Gaelic," he wrote, "was a grand language in which to curse, for it provided a range of denunciation and damnation that was at once alarming and magnificent.

It was also a grand language in which to pray, for it had an intimacy and a depth of devotion that no other language can approach. The good people of Washabuck were great cursers and prayers, moving from one to the other with great dexterity."
