George Henry Murray
Canada's longest-serving provincial premier George Henry Murray (1861-1929) was the longest-serving head of government in Canadian history, serving as Nova Scotia's 9th premier for 27 consecutive years from 1896, resigning in 1923.
He was born in Grand Narrows, and despite his political longevity was defeated in five provincial and federal elections before he managed to get a seat.
Some of his government's accomplishments included: doubling railway trackage in his first decade in office; introducing workers compensation for injuries on the job; improving post-secondary education particularly in the areas of agriculture and vocational training; instituting women's suffrage and establishing county health clinics.
In 1906 his government instituted prohibition. Murray twice declined offers of knighthood and offers to join the federal Cabinet of Sir Wilfrid Laurier.
