  • The present name, adopted in 1880, honours John Douglas Sutherland Campbell, Marquess of Lorne and 9th Duke of Argyll (1845-1914), governor general from 1878-83.
  • Strath is from the Gaelic srath, 'valley.' Settled in the early 1800s.

  • James D. Gillis

    a.k.a. the poet Jimmy Dubh Writer and raconteur James D. Gillis (1870-1914), known to generations as the bard Jimmy Dubh, was born in Strathlorne.

    He taught school, and played the violin and bagpipes and was best known for a series of books he wrote, including: The Cape Breton Giant, The Great Election and A Sketch of My Life.

    In the last book mentioned, he wrote: "I was twice to the United States; I do not say so for the sake of boast."
