- Duncan McLeod was one of the earliest settlers in 1809. The place was first known as Broad Marsh Cove.
- When the post office was established in 1885, it was renamed Dunvegan after Dunvegan Castle on the Isle of Skye, traditional home of the chiefs of Clan MacLeod.
