- Duncan McLeod was one of the earliest settlers in 1809. The place was first known as Broad Marsh Cove.
- When the post office was established in 1885, it was renamed Dunvegan after Dunvegan Castle on the Isle of Skye, traditional home of the chiefs of Clan MacLeod.

Angus L. Macdonald
Popular premier for 16 years Angus L. Macdonald (1890-1954), born at Dunvegan, was premier of Nova Scotia from 1933-40 and from 1945-54.
Between terms as premier he served the federal cabinet as minister of National Defence for Naval Services.
Macdonald's great-grandfather was part of the Highland migration to Cape Breton and on his mother's side, his ancestors were Acadian. This heritage, plus a deep understanding of Nova Scotia and great oratorical skills in English and Gaelic, explains his popularity and length of tenure as premier.
In fact Macdonald was so popular that rival politicians nicknamed him "the pope."
