Description From Owner:
- The community was incorporated as a service commission in 1849. It was named for Capt. William Spry, who served at the Siege of Fortress Louisbourg in 1758 and was the Commanding Royal Engineer at Halifax from 1775-83.
- In 1769 the Council of Nova Scotia granted Spry 1,000 acres abutting 500 acres he had purchased at North West Arm.
- Tradition relates that Spry used soldiers from the Halifax garrison to clear some of his land which then became Spry's Field.
- When Spry returned to England in 1783 he advertised for sale Spryfield Farm of 1,500 acres, of which 100 acres had been cleared, house, barns, garden, fruit trees, cattle and poultry.
- The property was then leased for seven years to Jacob Bower for £100 per annum. The first grantee in the Spryfield area was Henry Lieblin, a Halifax baker who received 500 acres in 1767, built a home called Lieblin Manor, a bake house and brew house.
