Description From Owner:
- In 1795, Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, erected a barracks on the edge of the Prince's Lodge estate which he had leased from Gov. Wentworth. It housed two companies of his regiment, the 7th Foot, or Royal Fusiliers.
- After he returned to England in 1800, the property reverted to Wentworth who converted one of the barracks to an inn. This hostelry was home to the Rockingham Club, a men's dining club for the Halifax elite.
- For a time that district was called Four Mile House because it was then that distance NW of Halifax. It later became the Rockingham Inn until it was destroyed by fire in 1833.
- The name which eventually became that of the community, was chosen by Wentworth as a tribute to Charles Watson-Wentworth, 2nd Marquis of Rockingham (1730–82), prime minister of Great Britain in 1782.
