Description From Owner:
  • A suburb on Bedford Basin where His Royal Highness Prince Edward, Duke of Kent (1767-1872), father of Queen Victoria, built a mansion called Prince's Lodge while he commanded the British Army at Halifax (1794-1800).
  • A little town grew here to house those employed on the estate. The lodge was a favourite retreat for the prince and his consort, Thérèse-Bernadine Montgenet (1760-1830), who was also known as Madame Julie St. Laurent.
  • Later the prince, 'for reasons of state,' was forced to set her aside and marry a German noblewoman, Victoria Maria Louisa, Princess of Saxe-Cobourg. Their daughter became Queen Victoria.
  • The 500-acre property belonged to the governor of Nova Scotia, Sir John Wentworth, who had called the place Friar Lawrence's Cell. When Prince Edward returned to England, the Wentworths resumed occupation of Prince's Lodge.
  • After Sir John's death, the mansion was allowed to decay and the property was eventually sold for building lots.
  • The only surviving structure on the estate is the round, domed music room which was taken over by the Nova Scotia government in 1959 as a provincial building.
  • A section of the estate, including the pond, is now the Hemlock Ravine Conservation Area.
