Nova Scotia Tourism Region : Yarmouth and Acadian Shores
Description From Owner:
- Mi'kmaq called the place Nekataouksit, 'great forked tidal river.' A forest fire swept through the area in 1820 just as settlement was starting and Lt.-Gov. Kempt sent aid.
- The first settler was Abner Andrews in 1821. The place is named for Sir James Kempt (1764-1854), Lt-Gov. of the province from 1820-28. A gold mine was operating here in 1912 and there was another gold strike in 1960.
