- The first settler was Daniel Raymond in 1833. Mi'kmaq called the place Nesogwakade, place of eels.' Settlers first called the place Nine Partners Falls because nine of them formed a partnership to operate a mill.
- It was later called Temperance after settlers formed a temperance compact to ban all intoxicating liquors from the place. In 1834 the place took the name of nearby Carleton Lake which had been named for Sir Guy Carleton, Baron Dorchester (1724-1805).
