Description From Owner:
- First called Fletcher's Bridge for the Fletcher family. The name Wellington was bestowed by Lt.-Gen. John W. Laurie (1835-1912), who owned a large estate here called Oakfield.
- The name honoured Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington (nicknamed 'The Iron Duke'), (1769-1852). Wellington was prime minister of Great Britain from 1828-30 and served as foreign secretary 1834-5.
- He is best remembered for his victory over Napoleon at Waterloo in 1815. William Shaw had a 2,000-acre grant here in 1784.
