- Cape Dauphin: The First Nation knew the place as Kookumijenagwanak meaning ‘our grandmother,' after a certain rock.
- In 1711 the French Ann's Bay Port Dauphin, believing it to be a better place than Louisbourg, and advocating its fortification.
- Dauphin, for eldest son of royalty, corresponds to the English equivalent, prince.
- Fairyhole: The name derives from caverns that start in from the shore and extend into the cliffs for a considerable distance.
