Description From Owner:
- The community took its name from Oakfield, a model estate established in 1865 by Col. John Winburn Laurie (1835-1912).
- He was born in England and served in the British army during the Crimean War (1853-6) and the Fenian Raids. He came to Canada in 1861, retiring from the army in 1887 with the rank of Lt.-Gen.
- He represented Shelburne in the House of Commons from 1887-91.
