- The place takes its name from the lake, the largest in the chain between Dartmouth and Shubenacadie. The Mi'kmaw name was Tulugadik for camping ground,' or 'the settlement.'
- Six members of the Kenty family received a grant here in 1812. By 1836 there was a sawmill and Schultz's Inn. By 1857 the Intercolonial Railroad was opened from Bedford to Schultz's Inn and the station was called Grand Lake Station
