382 ELLERSHOUSE RD |
Nova Scotia Tourism Region : Bay of Fundy & Annapolis Valley
Description From Owner:
- Before 1761 this place was part of the area known as East Falmouth.
- In 1761, chief surveyor Charles Morris proposed the place be named 'Newport from my Lord Newport, a friend of Mr. Belcher's (Jonathan Belcher, Chief Justice) and I believe that it will be agreeable to the people.'
- Since many of the settlers had come from Newport, RI, the name was popular. New England Planters arrived in 1760 and petitioned to be recognized as a distinct town. Accordingly, Newport Township was granted to about 65 people.
