Description From Owner:
- In 1711 French surveyor De Labat called the island Ils de Chibouquetou. On 1732 map the island is shown as Scarborough Island. In 1749 it was renamed Cornwallis Island for Gov. Edward Cornwallis.
- The island was granted to James, William and Henry Cornwallis in 1752. In 1783 Peter McNab bought the island for £1,000 and it became McNab's Island. Settlement for the fishery began in 1752. The McNabs later sold some land for building lots for summer c
- Fort McNab National Historic Site of Canada: The grassy ruins of Fort McNab are at the S end of McNabs Island, near the mouth of Halifax Harbour.
- The fort was built between 1888-92 to serve as gun battery and gatekeeper of Halifax Harbour and the outer channels. It served that purpose until it was decommissioned in 1959 and ownership was transferred to Parks Canada.
- Through both world wars it housed the Halifax Examination Station, responsible for the vital task of checking ships to ensure they did not pose a risk to port security.
- The fort is now a National Historic Site of Canada. McNabs Island is accessible by private ferry from Cable Wharf in downtown Halifax.
