  • Nova Scotia's First Murder

Nova Scotia's first murder happened in Halifax in 1749 when an English crewman insulted a French crew member from another ship.

Frenchman Peter Cartcel apparently knew enough English to recognize the insult and immediately drew a knife and fatally stabbed Abraham Goodsides in the chest.

Governor Edward Cornwallis named himself and six councillors as members of a ‘general court and five days later convened a trial in a warehouse, one of the few buildings then available.

Canada's first jury trial under British law didn't take long. Four witnesses described the incident and after a half hour's deliberation Cartcel was pronounced guilty. He was hanged two days later.
