The name originated with a summer camp for underprivileged children incorporated in 1921 by The Halifax Herald. Herald reporter Laura P. Carten was its instigator.
Her popular children's column, written under the pseudonym Farmer Smith, was called The Rainbow Club. Rainbow Haven Provincial Park is nearby.
