Description From Owner:
  • Named after Preston in Lancashire, England. In 1784 the Township of Preston was granted to Theophilus Chamberlain and others, mostly Loyalists and disbanded soldiers.
  • In 1796, about 500 maroons, the descendants of Spanish slaves, were expelled from Jamaica to Nova Scotia and settled here on lands purchased for them.
  • The maroons were under the supervision of Alexander Ochterloney and Col. William D. Quarrell, who enlarged a summer cottage to a 20-room mansion called Maroon Hall just E of Lake Loon.
  • The building was also used as a school, club and centre of entertainment. By 1800, discontented with the cold winters, all the Maroons had left for Sierra Leone.
  • During the War of 1812 American slaves were brought from the Chesapeake Bay area to Halifax on British warships, and 924 of them were settled on the former maroon lands.
  • With permission from 'Nova Scotia Place Names' David E. Scott 2015

  • Kirk Johnson

  • Kirk Johnson

Boxer retired with enviable record Heavyweight Black boxer Kirk 'Cyron' Johnson (1972-) retired after winning 37 of his 41 fights, 27 by knockouts.

He had only two losses, one draw and one no contest. He was born at New Preston and had his first professional bout at age 21.

In 2003 Johnson launched a legal battle against the Halifax Regional Police for racism and racial profiling after his car was stopped for the 28th time in five years.

That time, four police cruisers surrounded the Texas-licensed Mustang, Johnson was ticketed and his car impounded for being unregistered and uninsured.

The next day the tickets were cancelled and the car was returned.

Five years later Johnson was awarded $10,000 in damages, $4,790 to cover travel costs from Texas, and the police service was ordered to create a scholarship in Johnson's name to be awarded annually to a student from North Preston.
