Nova Scotia Tourism Region : Eastern Shore
Description From Owner:
- Named after Preston in Lancashire, England. In 1784 the Township of Preston was granted to Theophilus Chamberlain and others, mostly Loyalists and disbanded soldiers.
- In 1796, about 500 maroons, the descendants of Spanish slaves, were expelled from Jamaica to Nova Scotia and settled here on lands purchased for them.
- The maroons were under the supervision of Alexander Ochterloney and Col. William D. Quarrell, who enlarged a summer cottage to a 20-room mansion called Maroon Hall just E of Lake Loon.
- The building was also used as a school, club and centre of entertainment. By 1800, discontented with the cold winters, all the Maroons had left for Sierra Leone.
- During the War of 1812 American slaves were brought from the Chesapeake Bay area to Halifax on British warships, and 924 of them were settled on the former maroon lands.
