Description From Owner:
  • The name is Spanish for 'beautiful door,' or 'beautiful entrance and was on the Shubenacadie Canal route. Settlement started in 1811.
  • Around 1837 James Marshall built a popular inn called Portobello House to serve passengers on the stage coaches on the Halifax-to-Truro route via the Dartmouth ferry and along the Waverly Lakes.
  • After the railway was opened to Truro in 1858, the inn lost the stagecoach business and burned in 1881.
