Nova Scotia Tourism Region : Eastern Shore
Description From Owner:
- The rural area is located about two miles west of the Town of Canso on the eastern shore of Nova Scotia. The name comes from the body of water between Durell Island and the mainland on which the village is located; a small strait known as a Tickle.
- Early variations were 'Little' and 'Tittle.' The Indian name was Kamsokooch, 'little place opposite cliffs.'
- Settlement began about 1814. In January, 1824, it had 'only of late become of consequence owing to increased population.' A Baptist Meeting House, newly completed, was blown down during the great storm of August, 1873.
- In 1913 a new school was built at Hazel Hill for the use of the children at the Tickle. A fifty year old school burned down on February 6, 1944, and was replaced by a new building the following year.
- Fishing and limited farming are the basic industries. Population in 1956 was 153.
