- This rural area is located on the south side of Fox Bay on the eastern shore of Nova Scotia. The Indian name for Fox Island was Sebelogwokun, 'where skins are stretched,' or Wokwiswamunegoo, 'Fox Island.'

- The name is a shortened form of 'Fox Island-mainland.' The mainland was once called Waterloo on account of the vast numbers of the slain fish after an encounter.
