- First known as Polley's Bog after the land was given in an 1821 grant to William Polley.
- In 1880 residents petitioned to change the name to Alton after a village in Hampshire, England.
- Alton is an ancient English word meaning 'the source of a stream. There is also an Alton in Kings County, 3 km S of Kentville.
