Description From Owner:
- In 1671 historian Nicolas Denys (1598-1688) described the lake: 'That which is called labrador is a stretch of the sea cutting in half the island of Cape Breton.'
- The present French name translates as 'Golden Arm.'In 1521 Portuguese explorer Joaom Alvarez Fagundes called a large part of this area Labrador. The Mi'kmaw name was Banoskek, deep cutting.
- 'Little' refers to its being the more narrow of two passages leading to the lakes. By 1752 there were five French families numbering 65 people living here.
- By 1828 descendants of the original French settlers had formed a sizeable community at the lower end of Little Bras d'Or Lake, called French Village. See also Bras d'Or.
