Description From Owner:
- In 1875 by act of the Legislature the area including the rear of Roman Valley Settlement, the rear of Salmon River Lakes, the road from Salmon River Lakes to Roman Valley and McDonald Settlement was named Glencoe.
- The community was named after a place in Argyleshire, Scotland, where Chief Maclan and 37 of his MacDonald followers were massacred in 1692 by soldiers (Campbells) of the Duke of Argyll's regiment.
- The Duke had accepted MacDonald hospitality during the previous 10 days. Prior to 1875 it was known as Back Settlement of Roman Valley. The first land grants were received here in 1867 but the area had been settled before then.
