- Charles de Saint-Etienne de La Tour (1593-1666) was an adventurer, trader and colonizer who came to Acadia while in his teens.
- He lived a nomadic life, marrying a Mi'kmaw woman and pursuing the fur trade.
- A vendetta between La Tour and his archrival, Charles de Menou d'Aulnay (1604-50), for control of the fur trade in Acadia not only dominated events in the colony between 1632-54, but included all the elements of a staged farce.
- Bungling Paris bureaucrats, ignorant of local geography, added vague territorial and political definitions to the controversy.
- In 1635 La Tour moved his headquarters from Fort La Tour to Saint John, into d'Aulnay's territory, while d'Aulnay retained control of posts at LaHave and Port Royal in La Tour's territory.
- This was followed by a series of skirmishes, fort-stormings, and assorted intrigues.
- The climax came with the death of La Tour's second wife, FrançoiseMarie Jacquelin (1602-45), following her gallant defence of the St. John fort in his absence, and the death of d'Aulnay following a near-drowning incident at Port Royal.
- Subsequently there was a marriage of convenience between La Tour and d'Aulnay's widow; they had five children.
