- Pointe de Bacareau is prominently featured on a 1684 map of this part of the coastline. The name is likely of Basque origin and is one of the many names for codfish.
- The local postmaster told the Geographic Board of Canada in 1896: 'We are of the opinion that this name is derived from the obsolete word 'baccalieu' for codfish which was in olden times given to this region.
- The point of land now called Baccaro is in close proximity to the old French Fort St. Louis and was corrupted to Baccaro by the English.' The name Baccalaos was at one time given to Newfoundland and Nova Scotia, later only to Nova Scotia.
- This place and a small island in Conception Bay, Newfoundland, are the only remains of a general name, Baccalearum Regis, which in 1542 was applied to Canada. This place was settled in the 1860s. The lighthouse was built in 1850.
