4320 LOUISBOURG HWY |
Nova Scotia Tourism Region : Cape Breton Island
Description From Owner:
- The Mira River divides the settlement into Grand Mira North on the W side of the River and Grand Mira South on the E side.
- The Aboriginal name for the place was Soolakade, for ‘the silver place’, but the origin of the present name is not definitively known.
- Caleb Huntington was the first settler in 1803, followed in 1826-28 by Scots from North and South Uist. These arrivals used a Portuguese name, Miré, which had been given before 1716 after a River in Portugal.
- The name shows up as La baie de Miray on a 1685 map and some historians believe it may derive from Jean de Miré, sieur de l'Argenterie or his brother Etienne de Miré, a lieutenant in the French marines detachment.
