- The place was first called Barachois de Catalogne, after Capt. Gédéon de Catalogne (1662-1729), a major landholder in the area. He was a soldier and engineer and was associated with the Comte de Saint-Pierre, proprietor of Ile Saint-Jean 1720-23.
- In 1723 he was posted to · Louisbourg to help with the construction of its defences. Settlement here began in the 1820s and '30s with immigrants from North Uist, Scotland.
